Classic tales stand the test of time because of their timeless stories that find relevance in any day and age. One such tale is the 1990 book, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, written by L. Frank Baum, which has inspired several adaptations and interpretations over the years. Among them is “The Wicked Years” series, starting in 1995 by Gregory Maguire, a re-imagination of the world and the characters. Today’s printable collection highlights the characters in the recent film adaptation, Wicked.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked chronicles the relationship of the Wicked Witch of the West, named Elphaba and Glinda the Good starting from the time they met each other at Shiz University. Elphaba learns the ugly truth of Oz hidden behind the superficial splendor of unity and harmony, the Wizard’s lies about his powers and the persecution of animals under his rule. This leads to Elphaba’s revolt, even at the cost of being branded a wicked witch and going against everyone, including her friends.

Cowardly Lion
You can see from the illustration how frightened the lion looks. He was first seen as a caged and frightened cub in Professor Nikidik’s class at Shiz University, who gets freed into the forest by Elphaba and Fiyero. He grows up cowardly in the wild and blames Elphaba for evicting him from the only place he knew as home.
Dulcibear, Elphaba’s Loving Nanny
Elphaba was born with a peculiar green skin and faced rejection by her parents; that was when Dulcibear decided to raise her while still taking care of the Governor’s family. She is forced to flee Oz during Elphaba’s fight against the Wizard, fearing persecution.
Elphaba Thropp, Wicked Witch Of The West
Elphaba Thropp is the reimagined character in the book series by Gregory Maguire, giving an origin story to the Wicked Witch of the West in the 1900’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” book by L. Frank Baum. She’s labelled wicked for trying to fight for the rights of the animals and the good of the Oz world.
Fiyero Tigelaar AKA Scarecrow
Fiyero Tigelaar comes across as frivolous and shallow when he first arrived at Shiz University, but with time, we learn he has empathy and a sense of responsibility. His character tells the origin story of the Scarecrow, as described in the original book.
Glinda, The Good Witch
Glinda is a powerful sorceress who was roommates with Elphaba at Shiz University, becoming best friends after initial misunderstandings. But their relationship suffers after Elphaba’s fight with the Wizard and Glinda sides with him.
Glinda Pranks Elphaba With A Tall Peaked Hat
This illustration showcases a defining moment in the film when Glinda pranks Elphaba into wearing an old hat to a ballroom dance. When everyone laughs at Elphaba, Glinda feels bad and dances with her as an apology, forging their friendship.
Madame Morrible, The Real Wicked Witch
Madame Morrible, the Dean of Sorcery Studies, is a powerful sorceress working with the Wizard and believes in the persecution of speaking animals, saying animals should be “seen and not heard”. Nessarose, Wicked Witch Of The East
Nessarose, Elphaba’s younger sister, is paraplegic and pampered by her father, the Governor of Munchkinland. She inherits after her father and becomes the Wicked Witch of the East but ends up dead after getting crushed by Dorothy’s house in a storm.
Pfannee, Galinda’s Friend At Shiz University
Pfannee is one of the first people that Galinda, before she becomes Glinda, meets at Shiz University and becomes her close friend. Like most Shiz students, Pfannee engages in mocking others to maintain the superficial social decorum.
Shenshen, One Of Galinda’s Friends
Shenshen is another friend of Galinda, who, along with Pfannee, keeps her company at Shiz University. This illustration of Shenshen with her hands on her waist shows her sassy and mean-spirited personality.
The Wizard, The Ruler Of Oz
The mysterious and all-powerful wizard of Oz proves to be a fake when Elphaba finally gets to meet him. He had used his technological prowess to fool the people of OZ into believing he’s a wizard when he first came to Oz in a hot air balloon.
