In many places around the world, several festivals are celebrated to mark the harvest. One such festival offering gratitude for a good harvest is Thanksgiving. Observed in numerous countries on varying dates, Thanksgiving is a day to thank God’s for mercies and blessings. In Canada Thanksgiving is celebrated in October on second Monday while the United States observes it on the fourth Thursday in November.
One of the origin theories of Thanksgiving in the United States is believed to be linked to the migration of English settlers sailing on the ship Mayflower to North America in 1620s. Known as Pilgrims or Pilgrim Fathers, the settlers established themselves in Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts. The initial period, they had to endure a harsh winter and scarcity of food resources. The Native American tribe, the Wampanoag, who had suffered heavy loss of lives due to an epidemic, negotiated a peace treaty, forming an alliance for mutual growth and benefit.
Their interactions, especially participation in the Pilgrim feast borne out of the pilgrims’ Days of Thanksgiving ceremony after a great harvest is believed to have led to the modern-day Thanksgiving in the US.
