Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the Chinese New Year is based on the lunisolar calendar, a combination of Lunar cycle and the solar year. According to the Chinese Zodiac, each year is represented by an animal sign. There are twelve animals repeated in a 12-year cycle. Each animal also represents one of the five elemental signs – wood, fire, earth, metal, and water.
Celebrated after the Winter Solstice, the first day of the Chinese New Year usually falls on the new moon observed between January 21 and February 20. The Chinese New Year 2026 begins on February 17, 2026, the year of the horse with a fire sign.
