“The Cat in the Hat” is a children’s classic written by the legendary writer, Dr. Seuss, in 1957, in an attempt to teach kids how to read.

The story revolves around two children (and a fish) who are alone at home on a rainy day when a tall, white cat, with a red and white hat walks in with a huge box and an umbrella, much to everyone’s dismay. The cat, along with his sidekicks, Thing 1 and Thing 2, bring down the house. The kids and the fish feel petrified thinking how the mother would react seeing the house in such a mess. But the Cat, as good as he can be, cleans up the mess using his machine.

It’s said that the Cat was created by Dr. Seuss as his own alter ego. Like the Cat, even Ted Geisel was an adult in form but had the heart of a child. Now that’s a fun fact indeed. Being his most successful character, the Cat has appeared in several of Dr. Seuss’s works, including “The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat” and “The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss”.

The Fish, formally known as Carlos K. Krinklebine, was a pet of Sally and Conrad in both the book and the movie adaptation. He was highly annoyed seeing the Cat in the house, especially when the mother was not at home. He despises the Cat’s idea of fun, which involves creating a mess and destroying things. But now, he’s quite friendly with the Cat and even travels around with him.

Here’s a neat illustration of the legendary sidekicks, Thing 1 and Thing 2. Thing 1 And Thing 2 may seem like annoying characters, but in reality, they embody the playfulness, mischief, and wildness rooted in almost every child. These friendly, but naughty characters communicate using sounds as they cannot speak.

With these two crazy creatures, I end my collection of The Cat in the Hat coloring pages. Feel free to use these coloring pictures throughout the year, not just during the Read Across America Week. But before that, I would highly recommend you to read the book, at least once, even if you think you have passed that age.  The book is so cool that young kids don’t even realize that they are learning to read. The premise of the story itself is so simple that most kids would relate to it. So give it a go! And don’t forget to share your favorite The Cat in the Hat character in the comment section below.
